If you suffer from persistent back pain you know how disruptive it can be to your daily life. You may be unable to think of anything else except finding relief. One such solution to your back pain may be spinal decompression. Spinal decompression therapy is a revolutionary treatment for managing back pain without the need for drugs or surgery.
A normal healthy spine is made up of properly aligned vertebrae that are separated by discs that allow the body to bend and move. However, after sustaining a spinal injury such as in a car accident pressure often times builds up on the spine. This pressure placed on the spine can cause the discs to become compressed, which can ultimately lead to back pain, neck pain, tingling, numbness and difficulty performing daily activities.
Spinal decompression therapy involves stretching the spine, using a traction table or similar motorized device with the goal of relieving back pain and/or leg pain. Spinal decompression works by gently stretching the spine so that it repositions itself, thereby taking pressure off the spinal disks. As a result, bulging or herniated disks may retract taking pressure off nerves and other structures in your spine thus alleviating pain. This in turn, helps healing in the disks by promoting the movement of water, oxygen, and nutrient-rich fluids into the disks. This procedure is called non-surgical decompression therapy as opposed to surgical spinal decompression such as a laminectomy or micro-discectomy.
Spinal decompression can be used to treat; back or neck pain, sciatica, bulging or herniated disks, degenerative disk disease, worn spinal joints, and injured or diseased spinal nerve roots.
One of our skilled practitioners will fit you with a harness around your pelvis and another around your trunk. Then you will either lie face down or face up on a computer-controlled table. The doctor will then operate the computer customizing your treatment to fit your specific needs. Most treatment sessions last between 15 and 20 minutes. Treatment is very gentle and while each movement is minimal it is very precise. Many patients find the treatment so relaxing that they fall asleep during the procedure. Depending on the severity of your pain, patients can experience immediate relief after just one session. However, based on your specific treatment plan your assigned physician may recommend a series of treatment sessions over several weeks for maximum effectiveness.
Anyone who has been experiencing neck or back pain is a good candidate for spinal decompression therapy. Especially those who have recently been in a car accident or suffered an injury while at work from a slip or fall or are suffering from a sports injury. Even if you have been experiencing chronic neck or back pain spinal decompression can help. One of our physicians will assess your condition and determine if you are a good candidate for spinal decompression therapy. However, keep in mind that anyone who is pregnant or suffers from one of the following conditions should not receive spinal decompression therapy.
